With every new year comes resolutions. I have an easy and fun one for you. Wear sunglasses. If you normally wear glasses, get a pair of prescription sunglasses. If you don't wear prescription eyewear, then get  high quality regular sunglasses. The lenses do matter. Not only will you look fashionable, but protection from the sun also reduces the appearance of wrinkles as well as all sorts of potential damage to the eyes including the the risk of cataracts, macular degeneration, pinguiculas and pterygiums.

We have all heard that overweight children frequently become overweight adults, and with that are at a much higher risk for many health issues from heart disease to diabetes to high blood pressure. A recent study though suggests that overweight children who lose weight do not have any higher risk factors than those who were never overweight in the first place. The health issues caused by being overweight also affect eye health. Encourage and model healthy choices. A little more walking, a few more flights of stairs, and remember to add fresh fruits and vegetables to your diet everyday.

Regardless of your age or physical health, it’s important to have regular eye exams. During a complete eye exam, your eye doctor will not only determine your prescription for eyeglasses or contact lenses, but will also check your eyes for common eye diseases, assess how your eyes work together as a team and evaluate your eyes as an indicator of your overall health. Who should get their eyes examined? Eye examinations are an important part of health maintenance for everyone. Adults should have their eyes tested to keep their prescriptions current and to check for early signs of eye disease. For children, eye exams can play an important role in normal development. Vision is closely linked to the learning process. Children who have trouble seeing or interpreting what they see will often have trouble with their schoolwork. Many times, children will not complain of vision problems simply because they don't know what "normal" vision looks like. If your child performs poorly at school or exhibits a reading or learning problem, be sure to schedule an eye examination to rule out an underlying visual cause.

Without the appropriate eyewear, computer users can often end up with blurred vision, eyestrain, and headaches — the hallmark symptoms of computer vision syndrome (CVS). Worse still, many people try to compensate for their blurred vision by leaning forward, or by tipping their head to look through the bottom portion of their glasses. These unnatural postures can lead to headaches, neck and shoulder pain, and backaches.
